Very Rare Antique Japanese Torpedo Academy Navy Lacquer Tray

This is a very rare antique Japanese naval lacquer tray, decorated with a detailed profile of a warship (looks like a cruiser) and a poem. There are also these triangular things on the right – I’m not sure what they are – they look like tents. The words on the back of the tray are « Congratulate Mr. Ochi on Term Fulfillment » and « All members of Navy Torpedo Academy 1st Group 2nd Class ». This is probably from Mr. Ochi’s fellow classmates as he finished his term there and graduated – the naval torpedo academy was for officers (lieutenant or higher) who were being trained to command torpedo related armaments. The cruiser on the tray makes a lot of sense in this case. The ship and waves are lightly etched into the tray – not just painting but hand carved, along with the triangles on the right.

Condition: Mint. It’s very rare to find trays in mint or near mint condition – they’re usually damaged in some ways due to cracking. The black areas on the border are by design.

Size: 13″x9″
