Very Rare Russo Japanese Personal Photo Transfer Infantry Lieutenant Army Sake Cup

This is an antique Japanese military sake cup, made in a very unique photo transfer style – except instead of generals, this is a personal cup. The photo is an officer, and the words around the rim are « Meiji 37/38th Years War Victorious Return Commemoration » « Army Infantry Lieutenant 7th Rank, 5th Class honors, 5th class Golden Kite » and the soldier’s full name Fukuda Toyotaro. The words on the back are « Sole sale permission » « Kutani Naka » – the maker’s name. The cup comes in original wooden box with an advertisement for the shop (green) and also a description of the shop in red. The red pamphlet is basically about how Japan has become an equal among nations with their victory in the Russo Japanese war, how their shop works really hard to make the best souvenir, and how they’re trying to expand their business. The « specialties » of the shop is listed on the left, such as the « 20th century’s great invention – the photo transfer porcelain ». They have some kind of monopoly as they have a patent on this technology, and the shop was based in Kanazawa – the heart of Kutani-ware.
