Very Rare Antique Japanese WW2 Military Battleship Yamato Named Ship Navy Sake Cup

Well, this has to be the holy grail of named ship cups. The cup is plain on the front, and on the back inside the base ring is the naval insignia. The words on the side are « Award » « Warship Yamato ». Now, you may say there were two ships named Yamato in the history of the Japanese navy. The first one was a sloop named Yamato – incidentally its first captain was the future Admiral Togo. Anyway, the reason I believe this is the second and much more famous Yamato is twofold – the cup is not decorated on the front, which is more common for late war lacquer cups than any other period (usually you would have some decoration on the front). The other reason is the lettering used is the blocky, printed font. Earlier cups, especially Meiji era cups, would have the much more elaborate older typeface typical of the period. This cup’s font is consistent with my Singapore capture cup, for example.

Anyway, Yamato. Need I say more? You won’t see another one of these anytime soon.

Condition: Excellent – the gold on the word is a bit discolored so some of it appears darker

Size: 3.25″ across
